More commonly known as IT Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC), the need for Logical Access Management has been driven by Governments and industry bodies around the world in trying to ensure organisations account, attest, control and audit access to their resources. Various standards have been implemented to support GRC initiatives: the most well known being the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), which was enacted as a direct result of multiple high profile incidents involving large companies which resulted from a lack of business controls.
Government-driven standards aside, Logical Access Management contributes in a significant way to best practice business controls and IT security: the aim being to ensure measures are put in place to prevent and audit un-authorised, inappropriate and illegal activities from being enacted. Ultimately, Logical Access Management involves being able to control and report on discrete accesses (also known as entitlements) to corporate applications, data and other resources by individuals.
