What are the common problems you see customers facing in ITSM?

A common problem is that the monitoring in many organisations is done in various silos throughout the company - so you've got a network team with their own monitoring solution in place, the server team with another one. The challenge is to get them to bring those together into one place where they can do something a bit more intelligent with them.

Why would you recommend IBM Tivoli Software?

The Tivoli suite is just enormously powerful. They've got a huge range of functionality within it. It allows me to bring together a lot of disparate monitoring sources into one place and apply some really intelligent event correlation and enrichment to them.

What is IBM Tivoli Omnibus?

Omnibus is the core of the Tivoli Monitoring solution. It's a really high performance database for your events, capable of handling millions of events in a day. It's the central place where you can apply all of the advanced correlation and event enrichment that the other Tivoli tools allow you to take advantage of.

The Tivoli suite... allows me to bring together a lot of disparate monitoring sources into one place and apply some really intelligent event correlation and enrichment to them.

What do Smarter Solutions mean to you?

To me Smarter Solutions is [about] leveraging the knowledge that's around in the company as a whole to enrich and enhance these events feeds coming in, so that when an event lands in front of an operator they can tell who they need to call to deal with it, what it actually means in the first place - what systems does it affect, what services it affects - and the overall effect that it's having on the company.
